Camp Programs
Surfing Program
The primary focus of Summer Soul Surf Camp is to SURF!!! Whether you are a
beginner or an advanced surfer, our coaching methods will have you up
and riding and perfecting your style while you gain confidence in the
water. We accomplish this by grouping campers by surfing ability. For
safety, all campers and staff wear Billabong Camps rash guards for easy
identification in the water.
Beginner Surfers
This group has either never surfed before or have only surfed a few times.
You will receive quality surf instruction both in and out of the water.
What you’ll learn:
- Reading the swell & paddling out
- Wave selection and surfing the right beach according to skill level
- Standing up and how to fall safely
- How to take care of your equipment
- Surf etiquette and surf culture
Intermediate Surfers
These surfers are riding waves and making turns.
What you’ll learn:
- Wave selection and surfing the right beach according to skill level
- Big wave confidence
- How to paddle through big sets
- Correct stance and body position
- Maneuvers
- Surf etiquette and surf culture
Advanced Surfers
Kids are able to paddle out and rip.
Program offers:
- Day trips to other local breaks like Trestles, Churches, Cottons,
Oceanside and Secret Spot
- Personal video analysis and style coaching
- Wave selection and surfing the right beach according to skill level
- Surf etiquette and surf culture
- Contest strategy and heat training
- Demo boards from Lost Surfboards, Timmy
Patterson and Cole Surfboards
Many NSSA and WSA competitors attend our Advanced Camp
Program
Beach Activities
Campers will enjoy beach time while taking part in some of these great activities:
Texas hold’em and board games, dodge ball, volleyball, soccer, capture
the flag, or a sea glass hunt.
Other Programs
Guest Speakers
During the week we have lunchtime speakers from the following organizations:
The Surfrider Foundation:
Speaker will discuss preventing ocean pollution, the dangers of drain runoff,
how to protect and respect our beaches and tide pools, and what you can do
to keep marine animals safe.
Surfline:
Speakers explain how waves are formed, how to read swells, and how storms are
formed.
Billabong Team Member:
Speakers discuss health and fitness, the importance of an education, surfing
etiquette, and big wave confidence.
Chill Zone
After a long day of surfing, campers are ready to “Chill Out” back
at camp and enjoy the following activities:
- Ping-Pong
- Foosball
- Indo Boards
- Skateboards and bikes (helmets are mandatory)
- Daily review of campers’ surf videos
- Painting clinics
- Guitar clinics
- Surfboard shaping
- Bead weaving
- Ding repair clinics
CPR Training: (Optional)
Throughout the week campers receive 4 hours of CPR training
from a certified CPR instructor. Each camper will receive a CPR card
at the completion of the course.
Surf Shop Tour (Optional)
Campers are taken to local surf retailers and receive a 15% discount on any
purchase.
Museum Tour (Optional)
Campers receive a guided tour of the Heritage of Surfing Foundation Museum.
They’ll learn about the history of surfing, Hawaiian surf culture and
see some of the first surfboards ever made, along with other exciting surfing
memorabilia.
Jewelry Making (Optional)
Campers are provided with a wide selection of glass and wooden beads, sea glass,
shells, hemp rope and other jewelry making tools and supplies. Staff members
assist with weaving and beading techniques.
Skateboard Park (Overnight Only)
Campers have the option to skate at the San Clemente City Skate Park, supervised
by camp staff members. Bring your own helmets and pads, they are mandatory!!
Only advanced skateboarders permitted.
Music (Overnight Only)
Campers will have access to guitars and bongo drums. Staff members will offer
basic guitar instruction and cord progression. Rock out during one of our
campfire jam sessions.
Painting (Overnight Only)
Campers are provided with brushes, paints, two canvases, and basic painting
instruction including mixing color and different brushing techniques. At
the end of camp, awards will be given for the best painting. Our 2005 camp
produced an impressive art gallery for all to see.
Additional canvases can be purchases from camp staff
Surfboard Shaping Clinic (Overnight
Only)
Learn to shape a surfboard from a local shaper. Understand the dimensions of
a surfboard, including the importance of the tail and nose rocker, selection
of thickness and width, according to your height and weight.
Ding Repair Clinic (Overnight Only)
Learn proper ding preparation, resin application, sanding and finishing without
making a mess.
Movie Night (Overnight Only)
Watch surf videos and movies on our big screen TV while relaxing in comfy couches
and beanbags. Campers will vote on movie choice. Some of the movie options:
North Shore, Blue Crush, Endless Summer, Endless Summer 2, and Riding Giants.
Camp Rules:
Rules for Summer Soul Surf Camp are as follows
- Show respect to all
- No swearing or obscene gestures
- No drugs or alcohol
- Camp curfew and roll call at 8:00 pm (Overnight Only)
- No camper leaves camp alone and is with an adult at
night for restroom trips (Overnight Only)
- First strike- parents will be called.
- Second strike-you go home.
There will be no refunds; so be cool.
